What would THE YARD be without an amazing show runner? Nothing of course. Enter Courtney, a native of the DMV. She reached out in her Senior year of High school to be apart of the cast. She wasn’t sure if she would end go to Howard or Spelman, but we were so impressed with her talents we considered starting a Howard University franchise to accommodate her ambitions. Not to worry, she came to Spelman College , and is ready to take THE YARD to new heights.
What are you up to this summer?
This summer Iʼm shadowing two newscasters in the Washington, Dc Area: Cynneʼ Simpson of WJLA and Lindsay Czarniak of NBC4. I spend about two to three days a week with each of them and sometimes even get to come with them when they interview and/or report from sporting events in the nationʼs capitol. I also have a part time job at TJMaxx. =)
So whatʼs a day with Cynne Simpson and Lindsay Czarniak like?
Lots of fun! Cynne Simpson graduated from Howard University so we have the HBCU connect going on and she gives me insiders about the broadcasting industry that are definitely beneficial for an African American woman. We often have lunch together because I come in the afternoons. Watching her onscreen behind the camera man is amazing she is an amazing person on and off camera. Defnitely a role model. Lindsay Czarniak is a sportscaster who has done everything from NASCAR events to Americas favorite pastime of baseball. She is what I strive to become: a well-known woman sportscaster.
Whatʼs your favorite part of the shadowing?
Watching each of them in their element. My favorite experience was tagging along to interview some of the Washington Nationals Baseball players. Lindsay Czarniak seemed so comfortable and thats how I want to be.
Even though youʼre only about to start your sophomore year, whatʼs your plans after Spelman?
My plans after Spelman are simple. Becoming the next big thing in Sports broadcasting. Iʼd like to say I want to be the next Carrie Bradshaw of ESPN. You know the lead of Sex and the city? yup! =) And obtaining a masterʼs degree in journalism from the University of Florida.

Shenaika is now in her 2nd season as the National Yard Correspondent. Her series on COLLEGE RELATIONSHIPS here on theyardradio.com caused quite a stir last semester. She’s a very busy lady, as you’ll find out, hence her missing the season 3 photo shoots. Don’t worry, we were able to slow her down enough this year to take some snap shots with the other ladies and talk to us about her summer endeavors.
Hey Shenaika, tell us about what you’re up to this summer!
This summer I’m taking Statistics and English classes at Agnes Scott College so I can graduate early. I am also an ESOL Volunteer, I teach immigrants English grammar and writing every Wednesday morning- I love it! I also have a part-time internship at WRFG 89.3.
The internship sounds interesting, what do you do for the station?
I mainly work for the segment Radio Diaspora that airs every Saturday from 5-7pm. The show is a progressive analysis of news and issues impacting diverse Latino and Caribbean Communities. The show focuses on Afro-Latino, Afro Caribbean and Indigenous peoples who are traditionally under-represented in the media. It is a bilingual show which features an English hour and Spanish hour. I report news during the English hour.
Tell us more about the ESOL Volunteering?
It’s every Wednesday morning. I have to make up a lesson plan days before class so that I am organized while teaching. The students are really fun and interesting. Most of them are from Mexico so they write about their country a lot in their essays. I think it is important for them to learn how to speak English in order to survive in America, especially with all these new laws, racism, and the situation in Arizona.
What do you like most about your internship and teaching?
I like learning about different people and their culture. Ironically, both of my summer activities intertwine with one another as they both focus on the Latino community- which is really exciting because I am not very familiar with their culture.
What are your plans for the future?
My dream is to go to UC Berkeley for grad school and receive my masters in communications. I also want to do the 2 year fast-track program in which I can receive my Ph.D. in law while studying to get my masters. I just know I will be in school for a long time!!
So this season marks THE YARD’s 4th season in Atlanta. This year we have our first all female cast and they represent all corners of the Atlanta college community.
The ladies are all very driven and are doing some interesting things this summer. We’d like you to get to know them personally, so we sat down and talked about their plans for the summer. Meet the lead host for season 4, Amber.
Hey Amber, tell us about the company you’re interning with this summer?
Starcom worldwide is a media communications agency that works with marketers in order to advertise and reach their consumers and brands as best as possible. It is located in over 60 different countries. But I intern in the Chicago offices.
I work in downtown Chicago in the Leo Burnett building, several media agencies and companies operate here as well.
What department do you work in?
I work on a team called local activation. Local activation deals locally with national and local companies who want to advertise during tv and radio. We analyze the demographic, the ratings, the market, and we decide how the company should best advertise to its consumers.
What are your duties as an intern?
As an intern, I shadow several different employees on different teams in the office. I work on weekly projects concerning the marketplace, television and radio, and the economy.
What do you like most about the job?
The most exciting part of my internship is getting to meet with all the different television stations and other companies and observing how the business is ran. And there’s also lots of free food almost everyday!
There are also lots of cool benefits, like getting to meet important people, learning the foundation of the media, advertising, and marketing industry, and getting lots of free stuff! I just got tickets to the Cubs game.
How will this opportunity help you with your future career goals?
Even though I am interested in broadcast journalism as a career, interning with Starcom is a great learning experience that exposes me to the background of the media realm. I’m really lucky to be able to have earned such an awesome internship.
Good luck Amber, cant wait to get started, Season 4 should be great!
